Performance anxiety, the “yips,” and the pursuit of flow are like the formation of a geode—pressure creates cracks, and those fractures test your resilience. But just as a geode transforms into strong, brilliant crystals under intense conditions, athletes and performers rise from these challenges stronger and sharper. By confronting the strain head-on and embracing the power of flow—where focus becomes effortless—pressure turns into strength, and potential ignites into greatness.

Past Experiences and Sports Performance Anxiety

Life experiences can deeply influence an athlete’s performance, often manifesting as heightened anxiety, self-doubt, or fear of failure. Whether related to sports or other areas, these challenges can create emotional and physical responses that interfere with focus, confidence, and the ability to perform under pressure.

For athletes, the stakes often feel high, and the pressure to succeed can amplify unresolved struggles. This might show up as difficulty managing pre-performance nerves, perfectionism, or even avoidance of competition altogether. These responses can also affect bodily sensations, making it harder to stay grounded and present during high-stress moments.

In my work with athletes, I take a compassionate and individualized approach. Using EMDR and other evidence-based techniques, I help clients process past experiences that may be holding them back. Together, we build coping strategies to manage performance anxiety, reframe negative thought patterns, and foster resilience.

The goal is not just to improve performance but to empower athletes to approach their sport—and life—with confidence, clarity, and a renewed sense of control.

Performance Anxiety Beyond Sports

Performance anxiety isn’t limited to athletics—it can emerge in any high-pressure scenario where expectations are high. Musicians may feel the weight of delivering a flawless performance, while public speakers might grapple with fears of forgetting their words or judgment from an audience. Students facing exams or professionals during critical presentations can also experience similar symptoms of nervousness, self-doubt, or even avoidance.

These situations often amplify underlying trauma or past negative experiences, making it harder to focus and perform confidently. Through EMDR and tailored coping strategies, I work with clients to address the root causes of their anxiety, helping them regain control, stay present, and approach challenges with renewed confidence.

Flow State: The Zone Where Mind Meets Action

Flow state is that magical place where everything clicks, and you become completely absorbed in the moment. It’s often experienced during activities that require focus and skill, whether they’re high-risk or simply deeply engaging. Time feels like it slows down or speeds up, and every action flows effortlessly from the next. This heightened sense of attunement emerges when your skills and the challenge are in perfect balance.

In my own experiences with running, skiing, and white-water catarafting, I’ve felt the essence of flow state. When risks were high, I was fully attuned—my mind and body working harmoniously, with every movement feeling intuitive and natural. Whether gliding down a mountain, navigating roaring rapids, or pushing through miles on a trail, flow state transformed these moments into pure, effortless precision.

Flow state isn’t reserved for specific activities or individuals. Together, we can explore methods to help attune to a flow state, using techniques like mindfulness, visualization, and balancing challenge with skill. While it may not work the same way for every person, understanding the elements that foster flow can create opportunities for engagement, growth, and discovery in your own experiences.
